Flashing patterns of fireflies (Lampyridae)
Flashing patterns of male fireflies differ in rate and duration in different species. Female fireflies respond to the pattern of their own species and not to others (below, Photuris). Some insect predators of fireflies have developed the ability to imitate the flashing patterns, so as to lure males as prey items.
