Disulfide
Bridges
Cysteine (Cys) residues with an -SH at the
end of side chain may form disulfide bonds (- S -
S -) with other Cys residues to from Cystine.
These bonds form covalent "bridges" between different regions of the
polypeptide chain. The bonds form in an oxidizing environment in
the cell, and dissociate in a reducing environment. Bridges
are formed in a consistent pattern, and the creation of one bond
may bring to other Cys residues into contact.
