Dispersed versus Tandem DNA repeats in a prokaryotic genome

Repetitive DNA elements may be organized in end-to-end tandem arrays at particular chromosomal loci, or as single elements dispersed at many places about the genome. These arrangements are shown diagrammatically for a circular prokaryotic genome: in eukaryotes, such repeats may occur within and across multiple chromosomes.
