Phylogeny of living Diapsida

The ancestors of all modern "reptiles" (except turtles, and including birds) had a diapsid skull, with two temporal openings. In all extant groups except Sphenodon, the post-orbital bar has been lost, so that two openings are not apparent. Bird skulls in particular are highly reduced.
