Post-Chernobyl
environmental contamination levels
Approximately 5,000,000
live in areas of Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia that
are classified as 'contaminated'... (> 37 kBq
m2 of 137Cs).
This includes about 400,000 people
near Chernobyl who live in areas contaminated to the extent of >555 kBq m2
of 137Cs.
Of this population, 116,000 people were evacuated in the
spring and summer of 1986 from the Exclusion Zone
surrounding the Chernobyl power plant. Another 220,000 people
were relocated in subsequent years.
