Carl Correns (1864 - 1933)

German botanist Carl Correns was a student of Karl Nageli, with whom Mendel had corresponded concerning his experiments with peas, of which work Correns was unaware. Correns obtained results similar to Mendel in various species, including Pisum, rediscovered Mendel's papers, and published his work with acknowledgement of Mendel's priority, originality, and interpretations. Correns may have contacted Hugo de Vries with news of his re-discovery of the Mendel reference, which may have prompted de Vries to give Mendel more credit than he otherwise might have.

Correns' emphasis on the "scientific romance" of Mendel's rediscovery after 30 years gave rise to the new field as "Mendelism."
