General Degree Requirements

 

In addition to the following requirements, M.Sc. and PhD students are expected to attend the weekly Biology seminars.

M.Sc.

M.Sc. students in Biology must complete:

(1) Biology 7000 (Graduate Core Seminar) in the first September of their programs.

(2) Complete at least two other 1-semester graduate courses at some time in their programs. Additional courses may be requested by the Biology Graduate Studies Committee or assigned by the student's supervisory committee. The student must achieve a grade of at least 75% in each course.

M.Sc. students also must:

(3) Present a research seminar on their research.

(4) Submit a thesis based on this research.

 

Ph.D.

Ph.D. students must complete:

(1) Biology 7000 (Graduate Core Seminar) in the first September of their programs.

(2) Present a research seminar on their proposed research.

(3) Complete a Comprehensive Exam (Written and Oral components) by the end of their 7th semester. More information on the PhD Comprehensive Exam can be found here.

(4) Submit a thesis based on this research.

(5) Give a public thesis defence.

Note: Ph.D. students are not required to take other courses, however these may be requested by the Biology Graduate Studies Committee or assigned by the student's supervisory committee.
