Deferred Exam FAQs

Learn about the procedures for requesting a deferred exam, eligibility, and how to manage your academic progress in case of unforeseen circumstances.

The regulations for deferring a final exam are outlined in the University Calendar under the section Exemptions from Final Examinations and Procedures for Applying to Write Deferred Examinations.

  1. Complete the Application: You must fill out an application for a deferred examination at the Department General Office.

  2. Provide Supporting Documents:

    • Illness: If you miss the exam due to illness, you must provide a Student Health Certificate from your physician that confirms you were treated on the day of the exam. For ongoing illness, the doctor's note should indicate continuous care.
    • Bereavement: Provide an obituary notice or another document verifying your relationship to the deceased.
    • Multiple Exams: If you have three exams scheduled within 24 hours, you may defer the middle exam. Submit a copy of your personal exam schedule via StudentWeb to support your request.

Note: Doctor’s notes should provide enough information to justify your request without disclosing unnecessary details.

  • Fall Semester: Deferred exams are typically scheduled during the first week of classes in the Winter semester, though some instructors may schedule the exam earlier, before the semester starts.
  • Winter Semester: Deferred exams are generally held in the last week of April or the first week of May, often before the start of Spring semester classes.

Deferred exams will be similar in length and difficulty to the original exam, but the format may differ. Be sure to confirm the format with your course instructor.
