How will changing the prerequisite requirement for Biochemistry 2201 affect you?
• Normally Chemistry 2400 would need to be completed prior to registering for Biochemistry 2201 but in Fall 2021 you can request to be signed into Biochemistry 2201 while doing Chemistry 2400 at the same time. If you wish to do this please contact bcadvice@mun.ca with your request. (Approval will be on an individual basis, based on the instructor’s determination of the likelihood of each student’s ability to be successful in taking two challenging courses simultaneously.)
• This should increase flexibility in scheduling your courses.

How will a smaller class size of Biochemistry 2901 affect you?
•If distancing requirements dictate that we must reduce lab capacities, seats will be held for third and fourth year students at the beginning of the registration period.
•If you are a third or fourth year student needing Biochemistry 2901, please make sure that you register as close your registration time as you can. Spots held for third and fourth year students will be freed up for all students as registration progresses.
•We will also be running sections of Biochemistry 2901 in Winter 2022 in an effort to accommodate students who require it in their program.
•Second year students could potentially move Biochemistry 2901 to Fall of their third year with little impact on their program.
• To increase scheduling flexibility to offset this change, you can request to be signed into Bioc2201 in the Fall semester while doing Organic Chemistry (Chemistry 2400) as a co-requisite. (Approval will be on an individual basis, based on the instructor’s determination of the likelihood of each student’s ability to be successful in taking two challenging courses simultaneously.)

Details for Bioc3206 final exam:
The intention is to have an in-person, invigilated, final exam for this course. At this time it is unclear whether this will be feasible, but students should plan to be required to write their final exam on campus. Students will be updated as soon as more information is made available to us

How will the absence of Biochemistry 4211 affect you?
• Students who were planning on doing Biochemistry 4211 in the Fall should do Biochemistry 4210 (Biochemical Research Techniques I) instead.

How will the offering of Biochemistry 4232 in Winter affect you?
• This course will count as a specified biochemistry elective in all Biochemistry and Biochemistry(Nutrition) programs.
Course Description: This course will examine the structure and function of cellular enzymes and receptors. The molecular basis of enzyme-catalyzed reactions and receptor-driven signalling, as well as the equations and constants used to describe these processes, will be discussed in detail. The concept of enzymes and receptors as pharmaceutical targets will be highlighted with specific examples. (Biochemistry 3105 prerequisite).

How will the offering of Biochemistry 4242 in Spring 2022 affect you?
The offering of this course is dependent on the pandemic situation in Canada and the UK. Registration for the course will not open until a decision is made; however, students considering this course should contact one of the course instructors in the fall or early winter to express their interest. This will aid the instructors in planning. Students interested in this course for Spring 2022 should have a back-up plan.

• This course will count as a specified biochemistry elective in Biochemistry(Nutrition) programs.
Course Description: This course will be offered at Memorial’s Harlow campus in the UK. It begins as an intensive two weeks of field trips to various sites near Harlow, including nutrition and food research institutes and food production facilities, to address the themes Farm to Fork Food Systems; Food, Nutrition and Health; and Modern Nutrition Research. (Biochemistry 2600 prerequisite). Instructors: R. Bertolo (rbertolo@mun.ca), J. Brunton (jbrunton@mun.ca) and S. Harding (sharding@mun.ca)

How will the offering of Biochemistry 4502 in fall affect you?
• Biochemistry 4502 is a required course in both the Honours in Nutrition and the Biochemistry (Nutrition) and Psychology (Behavioural Neuroscience) Joint Honours programs. If you require this course in the coming academic year, you will need to complete it in the Fall semester.
• This course is reserved for Nutrition Honours students. If you are a Nutrition major or a Biochemistry Honours student and would like to register for this course please email bcadvice@mun.ca for further information.
