The following scholarships, prizes and awards have been established specifically for graduate students in the Department of Biochemistry. These awards are all made by the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

 

The Barrowman Biochemistry Graduate Travel Awards

These awards are established by the generous donations of family and friends of the late Dr. Jim Barrowman to honor his contributions to research and graduate students at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. James Barrowman was recruited to Memorial University of Newfoundland in 1975 as associate professor of gastroenterology and gastrointestinal physiology, was promoted to professor in 1979 and, in 1981, took on the role of the first assistant dean for Research and Graduate Studies (Medicine). The income from this endowment will be used to provide a number of awards to graduate students registered in the Department of Biochemistry, so that they may present their research at relevant scientific conferences. Preference will be given to full-time students, but part-time students will also be considered. The awards will be made by the Dean of Graduate Studies upon the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

 

R. L. Jacobs Graduate Research Award in Biochemistry

This award was established by a generous donation from Drs. L. M. Stead and R. L. Jacobs. Valued at $2,000.00, it will be awarded annually to a full-time graduate student (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) registered in the Department of Biochemistry on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated research ability. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award. This award will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

 

L.M. Stead Oral Competition Awards

These awards were established by a generous donation from Drs. L. M. Stead and R. L. Jacobs. Valued at $500.00 each, the awards will be granted annually to graduate students (M.Sc. and Ph.D.) with the best oral presentations during the Department of Biochemistry’s annual Research Day. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award. This award will be granted by the Dean of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

 

CIFST ST Graduate Student Award in Food Science Term Fund

This award was established by a generous donation from the Canadian Institute of Food Science and Technology Scholarship Trust Inc. Valued at $5,050 per year. It will be awarded annually to one or more full-time graduate students enrolled in a food science program within the Department of Biochemistry. Preference will be given to students requiring travel funding. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for an award as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. This award will be granted by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

The Dr. Patrick J.A. O’Doherty Graduate Award in Biochemistry

This award was established by Joyce (Noel) O’Doherty in memory of her husband, Patrick (1944-1979). Dr Patrick J.A. O’Doherty (B.Sc. University College Dublin, M.Sc. Memorial University of Newfoundland, PhD University of Toronto, Post-Doctoral studies University of Wisconsin) was an assistant professor of Biochemistry at the University of British Columbia until his academic career ended with his untimely death from cancer. Value at a portion of the income on the endowment it will be awarded annually to one or more full-time students enrolled in one of the M.Sc. or Doctoral programs in the Department of Biochemistry. The award is to be used to broaden awareness of biochemistry and its benefit to society. This could include funding for students to travel and share their research at relevant scientific conferences, or some other avenue that in a given year the department believes would meet this objective. In recognition of Patrick’s life journey which he faced with strength of character, preference for this award will be given to students who face challenges, such as, but not limited to, health, compromised learning abilities, speech or mobility issues, and/or financial need. Each applicant must be supported by a reference from the candidate’s supervisor that addresses how the nominated individual meets the award criteria. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for a graduate award as defined by Memorial University. This award will be given by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Head, Department of Biochemistry.

Dr. Kevin Keough Graduate Scholarship in Biochemistry

This Scholarship was established by a generous donation from Dr. Kevin and Mrs. Joan Keough. Valued at $4000 annually the Scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student who is in their first year of graduate studies in biochemistry. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens. The recipient must meet the minimum academic requirements for the Scholarship as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland. Application forms for this scholarship can be obtained from and submitted to the Department of Biochemistry. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Department Head, Biochemistry.
