BEYOND THE HORIZON

SIGNAL HILL CAMPUS comprises the Johnson Geo Centre, Emera Innovation Exchange and graduate student accommodations and is a place for fostering social and economic innovation, professional and organizational development, civic engagement, and public dialogue. This past year, the organizations, programming and partnerships based at Signal Hill Campus have continued to have an impact in our communities.
Genesis celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2022 with over 250 guests celebrating at The Rooms on Oct. 20. Since its inception, Genesis clients have raised $680 million in private capital, generated $220 million in annual recurring revenues and created over 2,500 jobs. Additionally, Genesis received its largest single donation to date from Nasdaq (US$1 million) in January, and graduated its largest Enterprise class of companies ever, with eight clients, this past fall.
In 2022, Gardiner Centre was honoured to have partnered with several Indigenous governments and communities in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as the North to provide customized leadership training for their senior leaders and managers.
During the summer of 2022, the Office of Public Engagement hosted Canada’s first Engagement Academy, a training opportunity for university leadership interested in embedding public engagement within institutional strategies, structures and processes. Memorial faculty, staff and public partners shared world-leading public engagement practices with presidents, vice-presidents and other senior leadership from across the country, playing a proactive role in developing nation-wide, community-university collaboration.
The Harris Centre completed its two-year public policy programming initiative, ForecastNL, which brought together experts, community organizations, government, and the public to discuss ways to mitigate and adapt to local climate change. It culminated in fall 2022 with the eighth edition of Vital Signs, an easy-to-read, graphic-filled report that brings quality-of-life statistics and news articles to the public. Through this, and many other ways, the Harris Centre continues to contribute to a deeper understanding of major provincial issues.
An iconic building on Signal Hill, the Johnson Geo Centre celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022. As the province’s science centre, Geo plans to continue sparking curiosity and passion about all things science, with dynamic programs and experiences to inspire future generations of scientists to learn about and improve our ever-changing world.
