Yes! The following are some relevant pieces of information:

• There are no residency requirements associated with being a Regent.
• The Board By-Laws state that “attendance of members at regular or special meetings shall be in person whenever possible”. However, Regents will be accommodated through technological means where necessary.
• The Board of Regents also has a dedicated Travel Policy that can provide insight as to how travel by Regents is managed.

The online Board of Regents Alumni Nomination Form collects the following information:

1. Personal Information – includes address, contact details, degree information and current occupation specifics of the nominee;
2. Nominee Biographical/Campaign Statement (250 words or less) – to be posted online and should provide voters an overview of who the nominee is, why they are interested in being a Regent and the value/experience they would bring to the board; and
3. Nominee High-resolution Photograph (JPEG) – to be posted online along side the nominee’s Biographical/Campaign Statement.

Other items submitted (e.g. CVs, resumes, articles, etc...) will not be utilized in the nomination process.

The estimated average for Regents is approximately 15 – 20 hours per month (180 – 240 Hours per year) dedicated to:

• 5 Annually Scheduled Board Meetings
• Attendance and participation in Board Committees
• Regents often sit on 1-3 Committees and most Committees meet in advance of each scheduled Board Meeting
• Preparation for meetings through reading associated meeting materials
• Other Special Meetings of the Board and Board Committees as needed
• Events and Board Activities (i.e. Convocation, Special Announcements, etc.)

Alumni (a.k.a. Alumnus, alumna) is defined as any individual who has received a degree, diploma, post-graduate certificate, or certificate requiring undergraduate or academic admission from Memorial University of Newfoundland including Memorial College, the Marine Institute and Grenfell Campus and all predecessors. In all cases, the program of study must have been approved by the Senate of Memorial University or the Academic Council of the Marine Institute (or its predecessors).

Voting will be done online and is accessible through the Alumni Engagement website at mun.ca/alumni.

Before contacting us, please make sure of the following when filling out the form on the voting page:

• Last Name – if you haven’t updated your profile with us since graduation and your last name has changed, try using your last name at graduation.
• First Name – this should be your given first name and not your preferred or shortened name.
• Alumni Number – If you are in our database with an active email address, you should have received an email at the launch of voting which would have included your alumni number. Please check your junk and spam folders as emails can sometimes be flagged as spam.

Votes cannot be changed after submission.

If a candidate must drop out during the voting process, all votes cast for that individual become null and void. Alumni who casted votes for that candidate will not be able to cast new votes in place of those lost votes.

A minimum of one person and up to a maximum of six people can be voted for but only one vote per candidate can be cast.

Voting ends at 11:59 p.m. Newfoundland time (11:29 p.m. in AST).

All final results will be available to the public for a period of time on the Alumni Engagement website (mun.ca/alumni) once voting closes and all successful candidates have been notified.

In line with the guidelines used in other election campaigns, candidate signage is not permitted on any Memorial University grounds, buildings or other property. With regards to posters, candidates must adhere to Memorial’s poster guidelines which can be viewed here. It is important to note that the median on Prince Philip Parkway is not Memorial property (part of Pippy Park), but for safety of campaign volunteers and motorists, use of that area for signage is discouraged. Areas outside of Memorial’s domain would require the candidate to check with the municipalities in question (e.g. City of St. John’s, etc.).

The name of the successful candidates will be posted on the Alumni Engagement website, mun.ca/alumni, on or before September 1, 2023.

The successful candidates should be notified by telephone followed by a letter of congratulations from the Returning Officer.
