Third announcement
Dear Collegues,
I would like to ask you about your plans to attend our conference in August, 2012. Please confirm your participation.
Now some information. The conference will run from August 13 - 17 (August 12 and 18 are the arrival and departure days for those who will reside on Bonne Bay Marine Station - BBMS). BBMS is located in Norris Point (NP), Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. You will need to fly to Deer Lake (airport code YDF), which is about 65 miles from Norris Point. It is a good idea to rent a car, if you want to travel around the island, with many natural and historic points of interest. The rental should be definitely done in advance, because of high demand during this relatively short tourist season. Otherwise one might hire a taxi: Pittman's Taxi 458-2486 (Norris Point), Glover Humber 458-8186
(Norris Point), Star Taxi 635-2521 (Deer Lake), maybe more. Taxis should be booked at least 24 hours in advance if participants are arriving late at night or early in the morning. We will also be helping people from and to Deer Lake. Please keep us informed about your needs and intentions.
About accommodation. Many people will live in the residence of Bonne Bay Marine Station in Norris Point. You will learn from us if we plan you to live at BBMS. Other accommodations are as follows. Norris Point is close to a much bigger town, Rocky Harbour (RH). Sometimes our participants live in Rocky Harbor because there is a wider choice of accommodations and restaurants in that place. However, if you do not want to drive some10-15 minutes from RH to NP, you can rent cottages in Norris Harbor. We could recommend Big Gardens Cottages, Burnt Hill Cottages and Ocean View Cottages. There are also two Hotels in Norris Point: Sugar Hill Inn and Neddies Harbor Inn. The best way to make your choice is to go to the web site of Norris Point at http://www.norrispoint.ca/accommodations.html. Do all accommodations well in advance, please!
Some fees will be collected when you come to register at Bonne Bay Marine Station on Monday morning August 13, 2012, around 9 a.m. This will include a registration fee to cover our expenses for the preparation of the conference and also some meals at the station, during our regular working days, which are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, including coffee breaks and lunches, delivered to us by local restaurants. If you plan to join us on Wednesday, August 15 for a boat tour to West Brook Pond (a former fiord, now separated from the ocean), you will be asked to purchase your admission during the registration. On the same night, Wednesday, August 15, we will have a conference dinner in Black Spruce Restaurant at Neddie Harbor Inn. You will be able to make your choices of dishes on Monday. Please bring enough cash with you because this is how you will be asked to pay during the registration and probably with some smaller vendors. ATM's are available around Norris Point and Rocky Harbour but often set to a $200.00 withdrawal limit.
We will write you well in advance to inform you about the exact amounts of the above charges.
Please be very careful with driving in the area during dark hours
because there are many moose wandering in the woods and across the roads.
Please do not hesitate to write in case if you have more questions.
Looking forward to your visit of Gros Morne!
