Countdown to the Centennial

Whale of a Day

Our third annual Whale of a Day will be filled with fun for everyone. And it all happens beneath our amazing blue whale skeleton in the Core Science Facility. The Memorial University community welcomes the public to enjoy interactive learning designed for the whole family.

The Centennial 100 will celebrate individuals whose stories help define Memorial University. We’re looking back on the people who helped shape our past and launching forth with our future leaders. We’ll be adding people to The Centennial 100 throughout the year until the list of 100 is complete.

Alan Doyle in Calgary

Alan Doyle (BA'92) needs no introduction. Best known for his work with Canadian roots-rock band Great Big Sea, Alan has been packing venues across the country for over 30 years. Along with his philanthropic efforts and collaborations with actor Russell Crowe, Alan has also written two bestselling memoirs, making him an iconic Newfoundlander beloved across Canada.
Memorial University will host private pre-show festivities at Alan’s concert in Calgary on January 18, 2025. Please note, this event is now sold out.
Film Screening and Panel: The Untold Story of the Suffragists of Newfoundland

Interested in learning about another important centenary that coincides with Memorial University’s? Join the Department of Gender Studies for a screening of "The Untold Story of the Suffragists of Newfoundland" (1999), a docudrama celebrating the thirty-year struggle by the women of Newfoundland to win the right to vote. Q&A with Panel: Marian Frances White; Margot Duley (historian); and Meret Ebsary (NL Rhodes Scholar 2025).

The Art of Engaging Community: Developing an Evidence-Based Zine to Promote Trans Health (Dept of Gender Studies)

Have you ever wondered if your research truly reaches the communities it’s meant to serve?
Join the Department of Gender Studies, Memorial University, for the second event in their Gender and Global Health Speaker Series: The Art of Engaging Community: Developing an Evidence-Based Zine to Promote Trans Health. Dr. Sarah Peitzmeier from the University of Maryland explores the power of arts-based research dissemination through her work on chest binding among transmasculine and nonbinary individuals. In collaboration with bestselling author Maia Kobabe, Dr. Peitzmeier turned her findings into the graphic novel Breathe. This talk explores the promises and pitfalls of using art to communicate health promotion and social justice issues and shares new insights from a pilot evaluation on the zine’s impact. Free admission!

Applying The Halperts’ Vision to Today: A Panel to Discuss the Halperts' Legacy in the Province and Beyond, Reflecting on Public Folklore, Community Facing Scholarship and Future Applications (Memorial Folklore and Language Archive)

Please join the Memorial Folklore and Language Archive (MUNFLA) for a roundtable discussion featuring prominent public folklorists who worked with or were influenced by Dr. Herbert and Violetta Halpert, the founders of MUN's Department of Folklore and the Folklore and Language Archive.
Our panelists will discuss The Halperts' legacy in the province and beyond, reflecting on public folklore, community facing scholarship, and future applications.
Facilitated by Dr. Jillian Gould, Associate Professor, Department of Folklore, this event will feature Michael Taft, Head of Archive (Retired) American Folklife Center; Neil Rosenberg, Professor Emeritus, Department of Folklore; Philip Hiscock, Retired Professor, Department of Folklore; Amanda Dargan, Education Director, City Lore, New York City; and Crystal Braye, Public Folklorist, Octopus Consulting.
Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, and light refreshments will be served.

100th Anniversary Art Exhibition at The Rooms: To Launch Forth into the Deep: A Legacy of Supporting the Arts at Memorial University

This exhibition, part of Memorial’s 100th-anniversary celebrations, offers a glimpse into its extraordinary collection of over 4,000 artworks. By empowering artists to thrive at home, Memorial transformed Newfoundland and Labrador’s cultural landscape, enriching local life and elevating the province’s voice on the national stage.

Black Liberation History and the Global South: Calling Out the Past in the Future
Feb. 21 (Now online only due to impending weather)
History is more than a story of the past, and in some cases it’s an ongoing struggle for justice. How do we confront the erasure of Black histories in the Global South and challenge romanticized narratives of ‘freedom’?
Join the Department of Gender Studies, Memorial University, as we invite you to the first event in our Black Liberation Series: “Black Liberation History and the Global South: Calling Out the Past in the Future”, an everyday dialogue about the struggles, triumphs, and joys of Black communities in the Global South. This talk will be led by Prof. Tshepo Madlingozi, Commissioner at the South African Human Rights Commission, who brings decades of experience in racial justice, human rights, and advocacy.
Together, we will trace the historical moments, ideas, and legacies that have shaped and transformed identities across Black communities. We look forward to seeing you there.

From Feb. 15-Oct. 19, 2025, the Memorial University 100th Anniversary Art Gallery Exhibition, titled To Launch Forth into the Deep: A Legacy of Supporting the Arts at Memorial University, will be part of a larger exhibit celebrating The Rooms 20th anniversary.
Faculty and staff are invited to join us in celebrating at an opening reception taking place on Feb. 28 at The Rooms from 7-9 p.m. The public event is free to everyone.
In addition, to celebrate Memorial’s centennial year, six of the pieces from Memorial’s permanent collection will be available for sale as poster and postcard reproductions at the St. John’s campus Bookstore (in person and online) and The Rooms gift store. Visit the Gazette for more information.
National Film Board Screening: John Ware Reclaimed (Alberta’s Super Cowboy) at The Rooms

Join the Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism for an enriching afternoon of film that showcases Black voices and experiences. John Ware Reclaimed is a compelling documentary exploring the legacy of John Ware, a Black cowboy and rancher in Canada.
