DNA Nucleos ides
& Nucleot ides
A
nucleot ide is
the
combination
of one or more phosphate
groups with a nucleoside [a
base plus a sugar]. In DNA, the four nucleotides combine a monophosphate with a deoxyribose sugar. These are
generically written as dNMP.
The base is attached to the 1'-C
of the sugar through the 9'-N
of the purine, or the 1'-N of
the pyrimidines. The phosphate PO4 group is always to the 5'-C of the sugar
